Info on the construction project at Central Expressway and Parker Road
New Parker Road bridge over US-75 Central Expressway
As you know, there's serious construction on the Parker Road bridge over Central Expressway. I was curious how many of the local buildings they'd have to condemn to give them the room they need to enhance the traffic carrying capacity significantly. So I researched it best I can, and got TXDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) to send me a couple of images.
I was surprised to learn that they plan to increase the capacity WITHOUT claiming any more land, by using a newer design called a Single Point Urban Interchange, or SPUI. Basically, you make the bridge much wider than usual, then make the whole bridge one large intersection.
Click here for a good article about this type of interchange on Wikipedia.
Images from TXDOT are below. I wish I knew how to make the first image appear about half as big so it'd fit on one screen.
A couple of notes:
- construction isn't expected to be completed until the end of 2010, but they're trying to do as much as possible at night.
- same as now, folks on the Central Expressway service road who don't need to turn onto Parker Road just stay on the service road.
- folks on the Central Expressway service road who want to turn right onto Parker Road would use the same side roads as now, but they'd be one-way.
- folks on the Central expressway service road who want to turn left onto Parker Road would take a ramp directly up to the bridge, where they'd turn left on top of the bridge. And Central Expressway traffic from both north and south would be turning left onto Parker at the same time.
- folks on Parker wanting to turn right onto Central expressway would use the same side roads now in use, except they'd be one-way.
- folks on Parker wanting to go straight would have a traffic light on the bridge allowing them to go straight or turn left.
- there'll be two new U-turn lanes for Central Expressway traffic from the north and from the south.
