for folks who live in Collin County, or a county that touches Collin County, or in Tarrant County

This is to tell you something about my law practice and my approach to divorce.

People come to see me about divorce, and they’re hurt and worried. The hurt comes from the breakup of a relationship they thought would last until death. I hear about broken promises, people drifting apart, abuse, adultery, and other hurtful things. Frankly, there’s not much I can do about the hurt, except to refer them to a counselor, especially if there’s a ghost of a chance the marriage can be repaired. These people who come to me for a divorce are worried. They don’t know whether this lawyer is going to aggravate a relatively calm situation: whether he’ll agitate the parties into trial to run up fees. They’re worried because they don’t know how long this will take or how much it will cost. They’re worried that personal details will become matters of public record. They’re worried that the peaceful breakup they’ve been working on will blow up when a constable serves someone with divorce papers in front of their friends and coworkers.

Most people don't want to fight.

I’m an attorney, and I’ve been helping people with divorces for fifteen years now. I’ve found that most people really don’t want to fight when it comes to divorce. They just want someone to help them work out something that’s fair to all concerned. They don’t want huge attorney’s fees, they don’t want the public embarrassment of a trial, and they don’t want the long delays waiting for resolution.I’ve helped people go to trial, and I’ve got a winning track record. But my real talent and interest is helping couples come to an agreed divorce. I call this process Civilized DivorceSM. If you and your spouse can agree to the terms of your divorce, I can help you get your divorce quickly, inexpensively, and privately. If you have kids, I will encourage you to do what’s best for them, which usually means avoiding a trial.

Frequently asked questions answered in the Guidebook

There are a number of questions people ask me frequently. How long will this take? Can one attorney represent both sides? What is collaborative divorce, and is it right for me? Will a constable or process server will show up at the spouse’s workplace and serve him or her with papers in front of friends and coworkers; or, worse yet, at home in front of family? Will I have to go to court?I’ve answered all these questions and many more in the free Civilized DivorceSM Guidebook, which you can request at the bottom of this page. Finally, I’m asked how much this will cost. The rule of thumb is that an agreed divorce should cost 1% of your total assets, or two weeks’ pay. One goal of our initial consultation is to find out more about your situation and give you a better estimate on fees.

What you get when you hire me.

When you hire me, you get the personal touch. I answer the phone myself. You may get a recording, but when you get a call back, it will be me, in person, and not a message relayed through someone else.

What you don't get.

I am not a high-volume attorney. For a number of reasons, I’ve decided to limit myself to 3 new clients per week. This gives me time with my family, and gives me enough time to concentrate on my clients’ needs.

I may not be the right attorney for you.

I may not be the best attorney for you. Sometimes a divorce just cannot be accomplished without a fight. Sometimes the best of plans go wrong and a trial just cannot be avoided. I’ve got a good track record in trial, and I’ll help you down that road if necessary. But if you know from the beginning that a fight is coming, you’d be better off with another attorney.I’m also not the right attorney for someone who chooses his attorney as a status symbol. My office is small and simple, and your friends won’t be impressed when you tell them about my office. I don’t have a secretary, and all I can promise is prompt, personal advice and representation.

OK, here’s the offer. I’ve written a guidebook to help you work through all of the decisions that need to be made to give you the divorce that fits your needs. With it, you can get a custom-tailored divorce; not something you bought off the rack, doesn’t really fit, but you wear anyway. There are a lot of questions that need to be answered in every divorce decree, such as, "does weekend possession of the children begin as soon as school adjourns, or not until 6:00 p.m.?" or "should the person paying life child support have to provide life insurance to support the child if he or she dies before the child turns 18?" All too often, an attorney makes assumptions and guesses about what the parties want. But this guidebook lays out all the options for you and your spouse to consider and decide. If you live in Collin County, Dallas County, or Denton County (or any other county that touches Collin County), I’ll give you the guidebook.
